Car Photography – Urban Automotive Study

Cars are as much a part of city life as the buildings and streets around them. This series focuses on vehicles in an urban setting, photographed in colour to emphasise reflection, surface, and movement.

The images highlight how cars interact with their surroundings, from light bouncing off bodywork to the contrast between machine and street.

This project ties into my wider work on urban photography, where everyday subjects are recorded as part of the shape and rhythm of the city.

Honda Motorcycle.

Good morning,

today i’d like to share some images of a recent motorcycle shoot.

Here is a short video of how I lit the above image.

The images were lit and shot by myself and I had to keep the equipment very light and compact to a single rucksack, so that I could ride the motorcycle to the different locations.

Volvo V50 - play with a car rig.

I know that we are all guilty of this, i purchased some camera kit, and it has just sat there for months unused... (this is just me? - yeah right)

And so it was time to have a play. I purchased some car rig - mounting equipment. For making the movement shots you see in magazines.

Here is a final shot, with using a slower shutter speed to give the sense of movement, i would of been blurred in the shot, and so inside the car is a strobe light, set to rear curtain sync to give a pop of light to freeze me, and make me sharper. 

I triggered the camera and flash using pocket wizard 3's. I find these work a treat. I have one in my hand, and when i press the button the camera fires, and the flash.

Added another pole to extend the reach of the camera. I felt the camera was too heavy for this though, as the poles were worryingly bending, and so only a very slow speed was used when driving.

My Volvo V50...

December i bought i brand new Volvo V50.

the previous car was a guzzler and so was fed up of paying through the nose to keep it on the road..... Que the volvo... and being an estate car its a true family work horse, loaded to the hilt with gear and getting away for weekends is fantastic. 

Here are a few images of the car on a great rough location 50 metres from the house, plus some detail images. 

These two images are a mock advert that i made.

Car Shoot with Dom.

Through a friend, i have met a photographer called Dominic,

He has some fantastic ideas and some very well exicuted work.

We decided to hook up and have a play with our cameras, he has a love for car photography and so i cleaned up the car. It was interesting to see how he views things.

i always find it interesting to talk to the educated photographers.  As i am self taught, its nice to see how they tick. 

This was a fun day, the fish eye'd picture was taken right on Preston North End's football ground. We turned up and asked the girl on reception, that we are students and for a project, can we shoot a car there. 

This is something i think can be used time and time again.
